With the U12-U15 playing well in excess of 70 fixtures many pupils took to the field to represent their teams. Watching A, B, C, & D play has certainly been the highlight allowing all to wear their school jersey with pride and passion. Seeing the U12 and U13 reach the Coventry Schools cup final provided great reassurance of the progress the boys and teams are making but all know there is lots more work to be done. The U13s captained by Oli Thomas beat Coundon Court who they had lost too early in the year and was a great send off to departing teacher Mr Super. U12 team report All in all the U12 rugby squad enjoyed a very successful season winning eleven matches, drawing one and losing just three. Captain Finn Connelly played with great maturity, leading the squad which was made up of boys with some rugby experience playing alongside those who were completely new to the game. The team developed well and learnt from early defeats to improve in critical areas such as the break down. They also improved their ability to move the ball wide, where Kifayat Siraj proved our most lethal try scorer. His natural strength and speed carried him gracefully past opponents. The forward pack also improved, with players developing their ball control and retention skills as the season progressed. Sharad Sharda was our most effective runner onto the ‘short ball’ always making the hard yards and crossing the gain line. Aman Koria and Raman Toor also stood out showing great determination in both attack and defence. The victories over King Edward’s Fiveways and Leicester GS were examples of the whole team playing well together. Outstanding handling, support and running skills were on display with Ralph Gawthorpe finishing off some exciting team play with brilliant tries. Despite his size Ralph was also our best technical defender, timing and executing his tackles with great precision. The season ended with a very close defeat against Bablake in the Coventry Cup Final. King Henry VIII School surrendered a lead at the end of the game to leave the players a little deflated. However, the work done over two terms developing individual skills and tactical knowledge should help them move forward next year.
