Teams of Year 7 and 8 students arrived ready for battle; the task, to make and decorate 12 cupcakes. A variety of different decorations and ingredients were provided and the bakers then started to bake. The standard of decoration was exceptionally high this year so a lot depended on the cupcake itself. Mr Slack, chief judge, came along to do the hard job of tasting the cakes to help decide on a winner. It was a close call but White’s just managed to pull it off with a delightful cupcake, baked to perfection and containing surprise fillings of caramel and chocolate, a close second was Holland’s with a beautifully hand piped vanilla cupcake and a very pretty daisy design, we really couldn’t decide between Hales who has made heart shaped cakes and Sherwyn’s who had opted for a chocolate-orange theme so they were awarded joint 3rd place. Congratulations to all who took part, in my eyes they were all winners and should be very proud of their performance and the superb results: unfortunately there was only one trophy, so well done White’s! Mrs Hunt Band trophy – hoUSe aWardS The annual Band Trophy Competition brings an opportunity for each House to showcase the diverse talents of their students across a plethora of events. This year saw strong performances from all houses with highlights for each house coming from a variety of events. Holland’s were overall victors of Year 7 Boys Hockey; Senior Tennis and gained the most points for musical participation, whilst Hales were most successful in Junior Music; Year 7,8 & 9 Latin competitions; along with Drama and Darts. The Senior Swimming; Senior Music and Intermediate Girls Athletics triumphs went to Sherwyn’s with White’s gaining accolades in Senior Hockey; Junior Swimming; and the prestigious Junior Bake Off. The last event in the Trophy competition is the annual Sports Day. After the lacklustre performance of the weather in recent years it was a refreshing change to see the sun welcome our occasion this year. With the runners and riders all present and correct the events began. As the weather was reminiscent of Rio the question amongst spectators young and old was clearly whether our budding young hopefuls could emulate the success that their Olympic heroes would be striving for this summer. From the hurdles to the sprints; the jumps to the javelin, the support was excellent , results were impressive, and sporting legends were made. A full review of House achievements, along with the overall results of the Band Trophy, is on pages 62 and 63. CharitieS report It has been another busy year for the school raising money for good causes. As a whole school we have raised money for Macmillian through their National coffee morning; we have raised money for UNICEF, Jeans for Genes and Grace Research Fund, and the National Poppy appeal. Different year groups and form groups have raised money over the year for Guide Dogs, Readathon, Crisis, MoVember, Red Velvet day; Project Trust; Sickle cell, to name just a few. Two highlights have to be 8HL who raise money for Myton Hospice with several events; including taking part in the Coventry Way walk; they hope to have raised over £1000, and just waiting to collect the final amounts. Year 9 raised money for Lepra with various sponsored events and an excellent ‘splat the teacher’. They too have raised over £1000. A huge congratulations and much thanks to all who have raised money this year, through cake sales and sponsored events. 64 | the Coventrian
