Apparently two other Houses were locked in a battle for the overall win but I’m sure that will be discussed elsewhere. Particular praise for the day must go to Thea Miles-Hunt, the Year 8 Victrix Ludorum, and all those who competed in a range of events. Overall our finishing position was an improvement on last year, but the year was hugely successful for a number of other reasons. The House was superbly led by the House Captains: Dan led his team to a 7th consecutive Basketball win, and Phoebe did the same in netball. Rosie led the victorious Hockey team and Josh a successful rugby team. All four were always willing to get involved with everything the House did, whether it be supporting the House Drama or taking part and encouraging others in House Music. As a leadership team, they were outstanding and should be hugely proud of everything they did. Good luck to all of them in the future. For much of the year, we had a rivalry with Hales’ for 2nd place. Sherwyn’s policy of being really good at lots of events meant that they were out in the distance but we took revenge for a rugby defeat with a physical win in the brand new Water Polo event. Fans of the sport would perhaps be disappointed by the skill on show but the last-minute win gave us momentum for the second half of the year. The girls won the whole event with Katie Pagan showing everyone how to play the sport properly. Two other Year 13 girls were also hugely committed to the House. Rachael always made herself available for House events despite the huge time commitment of being Head Girl and her performance in Cross Country was excellent. Alex was given the difficult task of leading House Music in a House not blessed with the numbers of musicians in other Houses but the end result was amazing: more importantly, it was clear that everyone involved from White’s really enjoyed being part of the experience. If we had a weakness this year, it was in the academic events included for the first time in the Band Trophy as an experiment. Hales’ moved away from us in the points total as we couldn’t compete in Maths and Latin. Happily these events won’t feature next year so we should be even more competitive. Final thanks go to all those students that participated and gave up their time and to the staff that supported the House. It was great to see so many students running around Memorial Park in the Cross-Country and I’d urge those students who didn’t take part to do so next year. As Martin Luther King said, “intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education”, and there is no better way to develop character than by competing in the Band Trophy with your peers. Mr Jones haleS It really has been the most amazing year of Inter-House competition. The race for the Band Trophy began in earnest, and remained a tight contest until the very last races had been run. As the year developed, the lead interchanged between Hales and Sherwyn’s numerous times. It was great to see so many students getting involved, obviously inspired and motivated by the achievements of their compatriots. I was particularly pleased to see the Junior half of the House competing hard in many areas, and achieving some great results. Years 7 and 9 boys and girls all won their badminton competitons earning valuable early Band Trophy points. Years 7 and 8 boys won their hockey competitons after some great team work. In the summer term they repeated their success by winning their respective cricket tournaments. It has been fantastic to see fresh sporting talent in the house, but also to witness the unwavering support and commitment from the whole team. However it is not just in sport where the Juniors have been excelling, Years 7, 8 and 9 all won their respective Big Latin Tests, Year 7 girls won their Junior Maths Challenge with the boys finishing second. It is no surprise that with such hard working students the Year 7 and 9 both finished first in the House Point competition. The Juniors played a big part in winning the House Drama competition. Lead by the outstanding Frankie Brown, Hales scooped the title with a tight and imaginative interpretation of MacBeth. Teamwork across the Years was also evident in the big music competition. Lead by Clara Harris and her team, Hales put in an outstanding performance to bring home the title yet again. They sang us out with Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, and we as a house certainly had a good feeling that we were on our way to something special. As the programme of House events evolves we have had to adapt to some new challenges. With all the atmosphere of the Lakeside or Alexandra Palace the school hall was transformed into the new Mecca of Darts. Adam ‘the hitman’ Huxford emerged victorious, again putting valuable band Trophy points on the board. Lutchan Panchal lead his quiz team to victory with an outstanding music round. And so it came to Sports Day on the penultimate day of the summer term. Hales were half a point in the lead and hoping to stay there. Sherwyn’s wanted to flex their athletic muscles and keep their amazing run going. All our athletes did is proud and gave their absolute best. The Junior Girls smashed their group, but alas, at the end, it was just out of our reach. Hales finished on 250 with Sherwyn’s on 252. So close, but it felt so far away. Hales have in recent years trailed Sherwyn’s by around 40 points, so our achievements this year were truly fantastic. But most importantly next year will be even better. Well done to everyone involved, I hope you enjoyed it. The future is bright, the future is green! Mr Carlyle 2015 to 2016 | 63
