That has got to be one of the closest House competitions in years, with Hales’ hot on our heels. Congratulations to all Sherwyn’s students who have scrapped away for every point and gained another well deserved victory. We’ve seen lots of changes in the House competition this year with a variety of new events, as well as a new knock- out format for some sports. It is fair to say that whilst these have not always worked in our favour, we have had great fun in the process. The new whole school House Cross-Country was a resounding success, and a great afternoon at the Memorial Park. It was fantastic to see Sherwyn’s students battling it out and supporting each other, with all runners counting towards the end result. Individual mentions must go to Hannah Pilbeam and Oli Thomas who both ran like the wind and won their year group races. As Planet Funk’s ‘Chase the Sun’ played out through the Main Hall, we knew this could mean only one thing, it was time for the most hotly anticipated event of the year… House Darts! This unique event would see our very own Cameron ‘The Camel’ Grewal narrowly lose out to Adam ‘Hard Hitter’ Huxford in the final. Whilst scores for the whole event were perhaps closer to 18 than 180, it was great to see our 4 competitors and our audience get into the spirit of things. Sherwyn’s saw successes in many sporting events including athletics, hockey, swimming, and a great run of results in the netball. A new event this year was the water polo, and Sherwyn’s did fantastically well with a first in the boys’, and a second in the girls’. It was clear that all students had a lot of fun, and enjoyed the competitive nature of this sport. Once again Sherwyn’s shone in the non-sporting events. We had a memorable win in the Senior Chess, and put on fantastic performances for the music and the drama. Our drama production of an excerpt from the musical ‘Annie’ was such a fantastic way to begin the year, and we certainly displayed a knack for comic timing. As always we produced a range of music to be proud of for the Major House Music, but we were unfortunate in missing out on second place. I must thank our House Captains for this year. Alistair Whelan and Caroline Ihenacho, aided by Alex Richards and Sherena Masharani, have been outstanding, and Sherwyn’s House would not have functioned without them! This year we have also had captains in each year group with them all doing sterling work. Special mention must go to our Year 7 captains Anya Kalsi and Karam Sidhu who have been incredibly dedicated and organised. Well done and thank you for all your support and leadership over the past year! With many more changes to come next year, I have every faith that we can continue to be SherWINS (thanks Sherena for this appropriately cheesy pun!)! Miss Burton holland’S Holland’s started off strong this year with the Year 7’s winning both relays on Sports Morning. Success continued with Year 8 girls winning their badminton competition, Year 8 boys coming joint first and the senior boys won House Badminton too. The Year 10’s contributed sufficiently this year winning both girls hockey and boys rugby in the winter term, I would like to especially thank the Year 10 girls who played at a high standard in all competitions throughout the year. Unfortunately the Easter term was not as successful with Hollands’ only victories in Year 7 boys hockey and Year 10 girls netball. So moving swiftly onto the summer term, the senior teams carried us through, dominating both senior girls and boys tennis with memorable victories all round. Seniors also kept their temper’s calm in a very competitive senior mixed rounders. We came joint first with Whites, with thanks to Anish Kainth’s final catch in the final game. Holland’s also saw victories in both Year 8 and 10 rounders and Year 9 cricket. Holland’s ended the year on a much needed high with huge success in inter house athletics with victory from both boys and girls. A special mention needs to go to the following boys: Conna Chahal who won both the hurdles and 100m, Will Stoker who won the javelin and 400m, George Gawthorpe winning the 800m and 1500m and Sam Bayliss for winning the triple jump. And congratulations to the following girls for superb wins: Tabitha Banks in the 100m, 200m and 300m, Lydia Banks for the long jump and Vicky Povey for winning the shot put. Holland’s won the participation to music award, for this we would like to thank Dan Brennan. He also carried us through the House Music competition and without his arrangement of ‘You Raise Me Up’ I don’t think we would have been as successful. We would also like to thank both Chloe Davies and Vivek Ghaiwal, who both helped motivate House members and always turned up with tenacity and competitiveness which was greatly needed in the house this year, without them our jobs would have been a lot harder. Behind the scenes we had seen a select group of people who have shown dedication and willingness to Holland’s House this year, we would like to thank these people for all their help and hard work. However, this can not be said for the whole house and is unfortunately the reason why we have ended up coming fourth this year. Hopefully we can put our poor performances behind us this year and our mindset will change next year to come with more people looking to enjoy the opportunities and competitiveness of House events as we have both found throughout our time here.
