They each bring with them their own skills and experiences while sharing the same energy and enthusiasm that makes Henry’s great. Just to be sure that they were up to the challenge, the team went out and checked some of them out. reverend hogger-gadsby I was somewhat intrigued when I was called upon to interview Reverend Hogger – Gadsby, I asked myself: “what makes a chaplain, and is it enjoyable? So when I went down to the interview itself, I found out quite a bit. Reverend Hogger Gadsby actually became a chaplain by accident, after being told about the role, she wanted to find out more. By doing this she actually got the job! Though the getting the job was unintentional, the Reverend moved on to say that she enjoyed being a chaplain and loved the variety of the job. Having worked as a youth minister, this is not the first time that Reverend Hogger Gadsby has been called upon to help with the everyday problems of a teenager. On a slightly lighter note, I asked her if there were any funny moments from her work, and with a laugh, the Reverend told me she had a few, but didn’t know which she could say. After slight pause, she half – joked that in Mr Morton’s candle assembly, she was really worried about one of the year 7s starting a fire! Reverend Hogger-Gadsby has worked as a Parish leader in the past , preaching and helping her area through church. I finally asked if she had experienced anything that she did not enjoy in the job. The Reverend assured me that she had no complaints about the job at all and that she was enjoying the job immensely. mr fiTT Mr Fitt is the new member of staff to the games department. He aims to have more external support from coach’s for both boys and girls; to make sport more fun and enjoyable for all students at Henry’s as well as adding more fixtures, especially to girls’ sports. Mr Fitt became a teacher as he wanted to become a professional sportsman but he was told that he was too short, so he decided to follow in the footsteps of his dad and became a PE teacher. When not teaching, Mr Fitt loves to play football with his 7 year old son (Sammy) and loves to swim with his 8 month year old son (Freddy). When he gets a moment to himself he plays rugby and cricket for a team. Mr Fitt first got into sport at the age of 5 when his dad took to him to a rugby match. So far Mr Fitt has had an amazing time at Henry’s; he says that both students and staff are great. His favourite part so far has been being able to see the first XV improve and develop to the standard they should be playing at. He has also enjoyed hearing how the girls’ netball has been dominating the Coventry schools tournaments and all the positive results. mr amlani Mr Amlani has been teaching for over 20 years ever since the late 90s, originally in London at grammar schools and comprehensives. He started because he enjoyed helping people and because he loves mathematics. He finds the best bit about teaching is the ‘penny drop’ moment when a student finally grasps a difficult concept. Also he loves the challenge of explaining concepts in different ways since every student has a different way of learning. Meanwhile the least enjoyable part of teaching is definitely marking. To Mr Amlani, maths is an art. “It’s not until you go really deep down and behind the scene of mathematics when you suddenly realise the beauty of it” he says. The interconnectivity of maths is what he loves best. For example, you learn the circumference of a circle at GCSE but at A-level you learn that it is just the differential of the area and you appreciate how it interconnects. Plus, it’s the cornerstone of the universe. In his spare time, he spends it with his two young children, and seeing distant relatives in weekend gatherings. mr Qasim Mr Qasim joins Henry’s as a member of the R.S. Department. He studied at Cambridge University prior to becoming a teacher and has always wanted to help younger people in order to give back all of the skills and success that he has achieved. Mr Qasim chose to apply for a job at King Henry’s due to its good reputation and proximity to family. Some of the main differences he has noted between Henry’s and his last school are the smaller class sizes at Henry’s and how much better the behaviour of students is. He has ambitions of starting up his own business in the future but later coming back to teaching. We wish him all the best for his future at Henry’s. miss griffiThs Miss Griffiths joins the Geography Department at King Henry’s. She has always wanted to make a difference to people’s lives and finds that, sometimes, children are easier to deal with than adults. Miss Griffiths has been teaching for over 13 years after achieving her Geography and Sports Science joint honours degree and knew she wanted to be a teacher from a young age. She last worked at Stratford Girls’ Grammar School teaching P.E. and one of the main differences she has noticed is the smaller class sizes available at Henry’s and, of course, the presence of boys! Miss Griffiths is also in charge of coordinating charity events at Henry’s and teaches hockey in the Sports Department. 2015 To 2016 | 5
