We have been blessed with a cohort of talented designers who have all worked hard to produce excellent work that highlights their skills brilliantly. We were proud to showcase their projects at the Annual Coventry Rotary DT awards exhibition in May. We were even more proud when they started to bring home the trophies from the event! From left to right; Conor Keen won the Best Electronics project for his decision maker, Chris Baker won the Best Resistant Materials project award for his iPod docking station, Visva Moorthy won best GCSE project for his “People Counter” and Josh McKinley won the top award on the night beating all other schools entries with his “Rotach” – a product designed to make it easier to change a bicycle tyre. He also won an iPad and the right to represent Coventry in the district final. He had to present his work to a panel of judges at an exhibition alongside the best of the other schools from the Midlands. He earned some high praise and, again, scooped the top prize! He has also been getting a lot of commercial attention for his project so he might be one to watch out for on the next series of Dragons Den. But that’s not the end of the awards for DT students this year. Our Year 12 students teamed up with the IT department to win with the Pi-Ano; a Raspberry Pi driven piano which will soon be on display in reception showing a selection of videos of the school depending on which key is pressed. Our VEX robotics team also scooped awards at the IT event for their robot earning a “Wow” award alongside tournament championships in the VEX competition. But we’re still not quite done! We are also extremely proud to announce that Visva Moorthy has become the first ever student from King Henry VIII to be awarded an Arkwright School Scholarship for engineering. Named after the 18th Century engineer Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-1792) known as the ‘father of the Industrial Revolution’ it nurtures the most promising talent from within the UK and supports them towards becoming future engineers. Visva was selected from over 1500 other students after several difficult rounds to achieve this prestigious award. We hope to build on this success next year. A small selection of GCSE work is pictured; the full range of work was on display as part of the Art Exhibition for open day for those who were fortunate enough to see it. Huge thanks as always must go to Miss Mould for allowing us to gatecrash their exhibition and share in the buzz of the evening opening event. If you missed it last year, then I can highly recommend a visit in 2017. deSign and teChnology 52 | the Coventrian
